Deviance and Criminal Activity in the Media
Throughout the years, the media has continuously portrayed deviance and criminal acts as something like a right of passage for teenagers. In several television shows, teenagers get drunk, smoke, have sex, and engage in violent or even criminal activities. Shows like Pretty Little Liars, Glee, and That 70's Show all, at some point or another, feature teenagers engaging in illegal or deviant behavior. A common trope of television shows and movies is "the burnout". One such movie that embraces deviant behavior in students is The Breakfast Club. A classic film, for sure, however this film features underage smoking, a teenager procuring a fake I.D., and other criminal activities such as damaging school property. Theses actions have, for years, been glorified in the media, and that doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon.

This blog post is very good. I understand what you are saying by the media glorifying such behavior. I also liked how you provided examples!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I totally agree with everything you said about how deviant behavior is seen as something cool in tv shows and movies, way to go!
ReplyDeleteThe media is always pointed at as a contributing factor to violent crimes. I like your ability to acknowledge that.
