In my first official blog post, I want to reflect on stigmas. I think stigmas have a larger impact on the way we think and act because of the value we place around them. A stigma is generally a characteristic or label that we don't want. This includes things like slut, player, felon, pedophile, etc. We as a whole society don't want these labels because people have a tendency to look down upon those who are shamed. We use this shame as a reference, to, under any circumstance, not reach this level where we are socially shamed and maybe even shunned.

Hi there! It’s destinee here, I want to talk to you about how the way society views you, and how it can be either helpful or detrimental to your life. Like with the rednecks and the saints. If society believes and smashes into your head that you will not be successful in life, then you will loose hope and that will potentially be your outcome such as with the rednecks. But on the other hand if society tells you that your going to be great in life and go places, you will walk with pride. It will make you dress
impress, befriend several, and have that ambition to go as far as you can. So just remember don’t listen to people and or society when you are told you can’t amount to great things YOU CAN, just don’t give up hope hold your head up high and reach for the stars.
In the saints and the roughnecks, The saints did more criminal things where as the roughnecks were more deviant. The saints never got in trouble, but got good grades and the roughnecks were always in trouble and society through they were bad. The roughnecks stole from gas stations and were always involved with the police and the saints would cause problems for other people as “jokes” and would never get in trouble. The saints didn’t turn out as well as the rough necks because they never were punished, but the roughnecks turned out fine because they were punished and learned from their mistakes. This story shows that if you get away with everything and never get punished you’ll never learn.
Getting Involved
One of the greatest causes of depression in society is just a lack of being involved. Feeling alone and not being apart of anything would make anyone feel left out, but he solution is simple...get involved. Join something that you are interested in, and become more social with the group. When I came to highschool I joined the soccer and basketball team, and I’ve made friend and some great memories playing the games or just goofing off at practice. Everyone tells us to get involved and they are absolutely right, it was the best decision I made and I don’t regret it at all.

Stigmas
As my first blog post, I wanted to reflect on Stigmas. A Stigma is a very negative label. Most of the time when people are called these labels, they get offended. Two examples of stigmas I have are both from the movie The Breakfast Club. In the movie the one character is called the "criminal". Yes he does give off a bad reputation, but he ends up actually being a nice guy. Also, another character is very smart and academic. He is known as a nerd and a good boy. He try's then to prove he's not.

Labeling Theory
Labeling Theory
Labeling Theory is when people respond to deviance based on the labels they are given or assigned. It creates labels in society like the eating disorder and other low self of steam words. These label can encourage bad behavior like the eating disorder and them starving themselves.
Differential Association Theory
The Differential Association Theory is when someone is more likely to commit a deviant act if the group you are apart of encourages it. I see a lot of this with my brother and his friends who are in college. A few of my brothers friends got tattoos on their body. So they wanted everyone in their fraternity to get a tattoo. They started to encourage my brother to get a tattoo as well. My mother never wanted any of her kids to get tattoos on their body. He did and I believe the reason was that he wanted to be like his friends and not be the outsider so he committed the deviant act.
Crime vs Deviance
Crime and deviance in society are closely related but mean two separate things. Crime is the violation of a law set by society. Deviance is the violation of the cultural norm. Most of the time the two are separate but sometimes they describe the same thing. Some examples of crime would be murder or theft. An example of deviance would be having a lot of tattoos or piercing or wearing strange clothes. An example of both would be wearing inappropriate clothing or drinking alcohol.

Saints and Roughnecks
The way the society views you will reflect how you turn out in life. If you are constantly committing crimes or involved in deviance and getting into trouble for it most people will not have hope for you. They won’t see you as getting anywhere in life. When people don’t support you or have hope in you it’s likely you won’t succeed. You will feel like anything you possibly could do wouldn’t be good enough. The Saints were always nice to people, kept their grades up, and were on sports teams.
Stigmas
For my first blog post, I chose to reflect on stigmas. Stigmas are a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person. Stigmas are used very often in society, and are mostly used to hurt a person. Everyone responds differently to stigmas. For example, if someone is called a slut, they might change their ways of acting because they don’t want to be called that. On the other hand, if someone is called a slut they might just embrace it and keep doing what they are doing. Overall, stigmas are not a good thing to use toward people. https://www.healthyplace.com/stigma/stand-up-for-mental-health/what-is-stigma/
Differential association theory
Differential association theory can be seen in the show I'm currently watching. There is a group of five people together and one of them accidentally kills a man. Four out of the five people there had nothing to do with the murder however the group all pressured each other to stay and help cover up the murder. Any of the four that were not involved could have just called the police but they felt pressure from the group to just stay and help cover it up.
Here is the scene from the show of the murder.
These are the people involved with the murder.
This is the man that was killed.
Medicalization of Deviance
The Medicalization of Deviance is having a medical reason to perform deviant acts. I do understand that a lot of people do things because they have severe mental illnesses, but I also think people possibly can plead mentally insane when they may not be. It goes both ways, I think it is an interesting topic. Looking at crimes done by people who plead insanity would be interesting. I saw in the news when that man shot up that movie theater, then pleading insanity, I read about everyone knowing he was very sick and antisocial, but he was apparently rational. That is just one side/story to it though.

Hirschi's Control Theory
I agree with the position of Hirschi's Control Theory. There are many examples in past history of people losing attachment, opportunity, and belief and this leading to those people to behave deviantly and even criminally. During the Iraq war, the insurgent group of Al-Qaeda recruited Iraqi civilians and former military leaders who had lost family, jobs, and opportunities in school due to the American Invasion in 2003. This caused them to be willing to join an insurgent group such as Al-Qaeda because they lost all other opportunities and reason not to participate in this behavior. While an extreme example I think it can fit well into the theory.

Deviance and Criminal Activity in the Media
Throughout the years, the media has continuously portrayed deviance and criminal acts as something like a right of passage for teenagers. In several television shows, teenagers get drunk, smoke, have sex, and engage in violent or even criminal activities. Shows like Pretty Little Liars, Glee, and That 70's Show all, at some point or another, feature teenagers engaging in illegal or deviant behavior. A common trope of television shows and movies is "the burnout". One such movie that embraces deviant behavior in students is The Breakfast Club. A classic film, for sure, however this film features underage smoking, a teenager procuring a fake I.D., and other criminal activities such as damaging school property. Theses actions have, for years, been glorified in the media, and that doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon.

In the saints and the roughnecks, the Saints did more criminal things but never got in trouble because they got good grades and were looked from society as the “good guys”. The roughnecks on the other hand, were more deviant and got looked at by society as the “bad guys”. The roughnecks stole from gas stations and in the end one roughnecks got shot. The Saints did things like running cars into barrels and things like that. The Saints ended up, one going to jail for the rest if his life. The roughnecks ended up pretty good with a
Labeling Theory
The labeling theory is when people respond to deviance based on the labels they are given or assigned. I think these stigmas greatly affect how people precieve themselves and others. This is clearly shown in The Saints and the Roughnecks by William J. Chambliss. The Saints were always labeled as “the good kids”. They did well in school, were involved in the community, and they were well liked by teachers. Therefore, they did many deviant and criminal things but they always got away with it because of their social status. The Roughnecks, however, were social outcasts and disliked by authority. Therefore, when they were deviant, they didn’t try to hide it or pretend they weren’t doing bad things because the community expected them to do just that. The labeling theory is shown everyday in schools do to hierarchy and expectations of students. People will continually do bad things if they are labeled as bad people. The way we are labeled affects how we think of ourselves and others in society.
